My First Sewing Retreat

It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down to write a blog. At this point, a little over a year since I’ve done so. But I’ve been writing for the AccuQuilt blog and it’s giving me the spark to want to write more here, too! And what better way to get back to the blog than telling you about my first sewing retreat!
Mountain Laurel Retreat
Let’s start off with where we stayed – because it was perfect! Tucked away in the Texas Hill Country just outside of New Braunfels is Mountain Laurel Retreat. It’s spacious, has a large kitchen and living room that fit everyone perfectly, is peaceful and was so nice and clean. I didn’t stay overnight so I can’t speak much for the rooms, but there were plenty of beds and space for those who did!
The biggest perk of it all was the oversized room set up perfectly for everyone to sew. There was a large, standing table area with mats for cutting, 3 groups of 4 long tables giving us each plenty of room to work, large design walls on each wall, extension cords for each person, a TV, ironing station – the list goes on, but it was a dream space for group sewing! We never felt crammed and all worked collaboratively to get projects done, encourage one another, and learn new things.

What I Worked on at Sewing Retreat
I have had a bundle from Then Came June set aside for quite some time now to make a half square triangle dress to wear at shows, specifically QuiltCon! I am using the Linen Gathered Dress from Daphne Design Co and piecing together half square triangles until I have enough for each of the pieces I need to get for the pattern. It’s fun and colorful and I’m crossing my fingers I’ll have it done in time for the show!
Trip to The Intrepid Thread
Even though this shop is RIGHT NEXT to a coffee shop I often visit, I didn’t discover it until this weekend and it was amazing! The Intrepid Thread carries Liberty, Tilda and so much more! And I may or may not have already gone back to help pull fabrics for a baby quilt. But everyone who worked there was so sweet and accommodated our crazy group taking over and having way too much fun making fabric bundles. It was so fun to see this much Liberty fabric in person!!

Counting Down to the Next Sewing Retreat
These few days were truly magical and did just what I needed to reignite my creativity and spark to get a few things done that I have left sitting in a pile. We all joked that we could do this once a month, but in reality it wouldn’t be the worst thing if that was the case. We’re thinking this is a great way to kick off every year and reset after the holidays!
If you’ve been feeling like you’re in a sewing rut, I highly highly suggest getting some of your sewing/quilting/crafting besties together for a few days of being creative together. It works like a charm!
