In order to help you keep the ombre look of the fabric throughout your quilt, follow the simple tutorial below.

Cutting Ombre Fabrics for the Survivor Quilt

If using the ombre fabrics from the Bloomerie bundle as your binding as well, you will want to cut these strips before starting the rest of your cutting. You will cut one strip from four of your fabrics and two strips from one fabric according to the cutting requirements for the binding in the pattern.

As you are cutting, it is important to have a space to keep everything in order and laid out through your sewing.

Step 1: With the fabrics for column 1, 3 and 5 of the pattern, cut four strips that are 10 1/2″ x 18″ as shown below:

Step 2: With the fabrics for column 2 and 4 of the pattern, cut one 5 1/2″ x 18″ strip from one end, three 10 1/2″ x 18″ from the middle and one 5″ x 18″ strip from the other end as shown below:

Step 3: From all 10 1/2″ x 18″ strips, follow the cutting instructions from the pattern and diagram below to ensure ombre look will carry through blocks.

D units will need to be folded lengthwise when done this way instead of folding directions stated in pattern.

Notes:

  • D units will need to be folded lengthwise when this method is used instead of folding directions stated in pattern.
  • Diagonal lines across A squares are drawn lines instructed in pattern. DO NOT CUT ALONG THESE. They are meant to show you the ways to draw lines and sew to keep ombre look.

Step 4: From 5 1/2″ x 18″ strips, following the cutting instructions from pattern and diagram below to ensure ombre look will carry through blocks.

Notes:

  • Diagonal lines across A squares are drawn lines instructed in pattern. DO NOT CUT ALONG THESE. They are meant to show you the ways to draw lines and sew to keep ombre look.

Step 5: From 5″ x 18″ strips, following the cutting instructions from pattern and diagram below to ensure ombre look will carry through blocks.

Notes:
